Football was a good call for me ...

there inside my helmet, no one could hear me scream.

And all covered up with tape and pads, if you hit the ground - wasn't all that bad,

yeah, football was a good call for me.

Playin' tennis was too easy - hittin' fuzzy balls was a cinch.

Yeah, I could hit 'em really hard, but I never figured out how to keep 'em inside the fence.

As far as runnin' in track and soccer, well, I could keep up in those sports,

But I was so dog-gone skinny, that I couldn't keep up my shorts.

That's why football was a good call for me.

Brunettes and blonds who spun batons made for super scenery.

And to make 'em feel for certain that a star was born,

I'd just rub a little dirt into my uniform,

yeah, football was a good call for me.

I played basketball like a marsupial because the others guys did, too.

But while I stumbled around like a koala bear, they were jumpin' like kangaroos.

Well, I thought that maybe baseball could be a sport that I could love,

but on the very first day I caught a line-drive, and it was not in my glove ...

that's why football was a good call for me.

Screamin' fans up in the stands drowned out my knockin' knees.

And to keep from windin' up with the ball, I just ran further than the quarterback could throw,

yeah, football was a good call for me.

We had pads on our knees - pads on our hips.

To keep track of our teeth we had a mouth-guard in our lips.

Of course, we had a helmet, and pads on our shoulders ...

and for the protection of future generations, we had a nifty little holder -

that's why football was a good call for me ...

there inside my helmet, no one could hear me scream.

And all covered up with tape and pads, if you hit the ground - it wasn't all that bad,

so when I think about bein' an athlete wanna-be,

yeah, football was a good call for me.

Football

After our only victory in 1972, we had plenty of reason to grab our quarterback, Steve Hines, and carry him off the field. Steve had a great game. I think George Heeke (one of our linebackers) played even better, but we went with Steve. He was lighter.
